HFSAC 21-3 (Anatomy of a Fudgehead)

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 21.  Page 4.  www.torcpress.com

In our last post of the year, let's talk about the Anatomy of a Fudgehead.

With the exception of the two robots (Tea Cup and PlatOmega), all of the members of the Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club have been physically reshaped by Omnichronus, the god-like Judge of Worlds, into beings who can survive in the rigors of the vacuum of deep space and the various harsh alien planets that they will have to regularly travel to.  In order to be able to exist in such conditions, you would need to be upgraded to fit the following conditions:

1) You would need to no longer have the need to Eat, Drink, Breath, or Sleep.
2) You would need to be able to be protected from the vacuum of space, as well as high pressure environments, as well as extreme temperatures (I've heard space is pretty cold).
3) You would need low level telepathy so you could communicate with other lifeforms (which would also come in handy when you're on an alien world and you run afoul of aliens who speak alien languages, having a low level of telepathy would make communication easier).
4) You would need very tough skin so that every little piece of space debris hurtling through the void didn't cut a hole right through you.

The human body, in essence, is a a whole bunch of water, with a bunch of water-filled meat sacks floating in it, supported by some bones, and wrapped up in a semi-porous (spelled it right?  What up!) membrane.  So, what would the body of a cosmic being be like?

Well, instead of water, the body of a cosmic being would be composed almost entirely of cosmic energy.  No blood.  No fluids.  None of the icky crap we're used to farting out on a daily basis.  Just energy (NOTE:  I think there's a scene where Cactus Joe bleeds a little in "Clown & Penguin" #2.  This was a mistake on my part, although the blood may also have been a slight biological remnant of the Clown's former anatomy).  Instead of traditional organs, a cosmic being would have organs that would be fewer in number, denser (possibly made out of chrystaline or rock-like materials), and largely devoted to the efficient processing of cosmic energy throughout the body.  Bones would be unnecessary, so let's just forget about that.  The Brain, again, would have to be composed of different materials, and would have to be of an advanced enough nature so as to easily encourage mind-to-mind communication.  And lastly, instead of skin, you would need a thin, flexible, and extremely dense material that could protect the rest of the body from extreme impacts.  The "skin" would also need to be resistant to extremes of heat and cold, because after all, you would need to be protected when entering a planet's atmosphere (don't wanna burn up upon entry afterall).  In further addition, the "skin" would need be designed to draw in and absorb the ambient energies that would fuel the rest of the body.

So, that's pretty much the way the Fudgeheads bodies work.  If you'll look at this page, you'll notice cracks in the skin of both Eyemo and Eyemii after they've been damaged, and you'll notice energy leaking out of the wounds.

The other trick that the Followers of Omnichronus possess that is unique to them, is that when they are severely injured, they can instantly (even when unconscious) generate a Cocoon made of solidified cosmic energy that will not only protect them from further injury, but also will repair their bodies at a fairly rapid rate.  This ability is a gift from Omnichronus to his followers to ensure that they remain safe even when he is unable to protect them.

One of the thing I feel I need to point out is how Null Vizor's personal philosophies are in no way related to my own.  I don't agree with Nihilism or any of its ideas.  I am a person who believes in things that are bigger than myself.  Even if I'm not entirely sure I'm a fan of those things right now.  Also, for the first time in my life, I'm not lonely.  It's been a good year, so it probably sucks that the next couple of pages of HFSAC are gonna be downers.

SDF7-10?

Today's Webcomic:

Seriously, where did the Puzzelor come from?  SDF?  Issue 7.  Page 10.  www.torcpress.com

Oh, one more book that slipped my mind from my end of year list, the Lord Baltimore books by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Ben Stenbeck.  When this series started I freely admit I was really only reading it because Mike Mignola's name was attached.  As the series (or series of mini-series, I suppose) has progressed, the stories have become stronger, darker, stranger, and continuously more violent.  The most recent entry, "Baltimore: The Infernal Train" was an absolute killer thriller and served as an absolute reminder of why I've been sticking with the (pardon the pun) dark horse series.

SDF 7-9

Today's Webcomic:

SDF.  Issue 7.  Page 9.  www.torcpress.com

I've got a slight addendum to my "Other People's Comics" List from last week.  After picking up the last couple of issues of "Bravest Warriors", I feel like the series is rapidly running out of momentum.  I'm not sure what happened, but the Mad, but structured, and utterly fun Anarchy of the early issues has seemingly been lost of late.  Not sure how much longer I'm gonna stick around.

I also forgot to put "One Piece" on my list because One Piece only comes out in Trade Paperback every four to six months anymore, so it's not fresh in my brain.  That's one of the reasons why I avoid "Trade Waiting", because I like to be knee deep in the world that a comic creates, and to do that, I need it to be active, not passive.  "One Piece" is probably the Best Damn Comic in the World today (and still the top comic in Japan, despite the fact that the emo-"Attack on Titan" is gaining on it rapidly).  It's never quite caught on with American audiences (it's popular, but not Pokemon/YuGiOh/Naruto popular), and now that I only get to read it in bulk two or three times a year, it's lost some momentum with me.  But that doesn't mean the book is any weaker in the reading.  Every time I crack open a new One Piece trade it is an exciting, emotional and hilarious experience.  It's the only thing better than Brandon Graham and Tom Scioli.

HFSAC 21-1

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 21.  Page 1.  www.torcpress.com

New Issue of HFSAC.  Same craziness.  In the meantime, we've also got this:

That's right, Issue 20 of the Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club is up and running and ready to go in Print Edition.  When I was working on the Script for this one, I was more than a little worried about this issue.  But, after it all came together, I really, really dig this issue.  It's got a lotta good stuff.  There's some romance, some character stuff, a fair amount of action, and the art is really frickin' good (a compliment I'm typically not comfortable giving myself).  And it looks better in print than it does on the Internets.  It's $3.50 plus $1.50 S&H, and you can score a copy at the main site at the Link above, or by sending a Check or Money Order to:  TORC Press, c/o Joseph Morris, 330 S 5th St SW, Clay City, IL 62824.  I'd throw out something cheezy like, "It'd make a great Christmas present," but that's not true (Can you imagine that nonsense?  "What's this you got me?"  "Oh, it's a great comic I really like."  "Seriously?  There's a Clown floating around in space in this thing.  Couldn't you have just gotten me a gift certificate?"), plus, there's no way it's shipping by Christmas.  I'm not even gonna be home today.

Pulp Horrorshow v4-1-11 (Other People's Comics)

Today's Webcomic:

Pulp Horrorshow.  Volume 4.  Issue 1.  Page 11.  www.torcpress.com.

So, I got a big stack of comics from Comic Quest yesterday, and it made me think about the comics I've been reading this year, so here's my Comics Reading List.  I think I did this earlier in the year (around June maybe), so this may be a bit redundant.  Anyway, here's what I'm reading:

Bravest Warriors: Why I Read It-  I really like the cartoony artwork, and there's a fun manic energy to the book.  It also serves as something of an oddball companion piece to Adventure Time.  Plus, they're not afraid to create something wild and goofy and imaginative.  Which I like.

Adventure Time:  Why I Read It-  Besides the fact that I'm a HUGE fan of the show, the comic is really great.  It's fun and silly and a nice breather from some of the darker comics I read.  I like the little micro-messages hidden at the bottom of the pages.

The Savage Dragon:  Why I Read It- I've come into the Savage Dragon very, very, very late.  Which is half the fun.  I don't really know the characters or the situations very well, so reading the comic is like assembling a big crazy puzzle.  Blindfolded.  And yes, that is my idea of fun.  It's also a really cool time to be reading the Dragon as the original Dragon has been "retired" and his son, Malcolm, is now assuming the role, thus creating a grand multi-generational epic.  Which I think is very, very cool.  And ambitious for that matter.

BPRD:  Why I Read It- Everyone likes Post-Apocalyptic comics, but the BPRD is a DURING THE APOCALYPSE comic.  You get to watch as the desperate and valiant soldiers of the BPRD are desperately trying their best to hold together a world that's falling apart.  Crazy new religions are emerging.  Every day a horrible, giant monster emerges from nowhere.  Entire cities (like New York) have vanished from the face of the earth.  Actually taking a moment to think about it, BPRD is probably the most underrated comic available right now.

BPRD: Vampire:  Why I Read It- This offshoot, flashback mini-series of the BPRD documented the fall of a BPRD agent as the darkness consumed him.  It had artwork by those brothers with different names who did the Umbrella Academy.  Which means it was pretty, while still being dark and creepy.  A nice little mini.

Abe Sapien:  Why I Read It-  Poor Abe Sapien has never been particularly lucky, and in this new ongoing series, Abe is wandering the Apocalyptic Landscape looking for his own answers in a world gone mad.  In many ways, it's like Kamandi with a Spiritual Quest angle.  Starring a Fishman.  So, yeah, I like it.  Art's good too.

Lobster Johnson:  Why I Read It-  There's been some Lobster Johnson one shots and minis this year.  I've read em all, because I really enjoy the 20s-30s environment.  And Lobster Johnson is AWESOME.  And people get shot in the head.  Oh, and there was that thing with the monkeys.

Sledgehammer 44:  Why I Read It- The latest addition to the Hellboyverse is a walking death tank powered by a ghost that shoots lightning.  So yeah, I like it.  I need more of Sledgehammer.  Also, great name.

Hellboy in Hell:  Why I Read It-  Uh.  Mike Mignola artwork.  Nuff said.

Copra:  Why I Read It-  I ran out of cash and haven't picked up the final three issues of Michael Fiffe's excellent Copra series.  Which sucks, because it's been really great.  Copra features a massive and interesting cast of characters, and I love the color work (how is he doing that?  Colored pencils?).  I wanna see how it ends.  Maybe I can use some Christmas cash to buy the last three issues...

Satan's Soldier:  Why I Read It-  Tom Scioli's lengthy "Evil Superman" webcomic came to a rather abrupt conclusion this year.  It was utterly crazy and beautiful and weird.  I loved it.  Again, if I wasn't broke I would have acquired the rest of the series in print off of Scioli's website at http://www.ambarb.com/.  I did score a print copy of Scioli's Utterly Brilliant "Final Frontier", which was Scioli's wild take on the Fantastic Four.  As far as I'm concerned the best comics this year were either produced by Tom Scioli or Brandon Graham.  Everyone else (including myself.  Sigh) tried their best, but there's no real comparison to the work these two are doing right now.  Speaking of which...

Godland Finale-- Godland wrapped up... last week... with a huge, insane, mind-blowing, eye melting issue of infinite awesomeness.  It's almost too much.  Which is what makes it great.  Even if you've never read Godland ever before, I encourage you to track down the Finale and just immerse yourself in it.  Best Comic of the Year, if for no other reason that we need more Cosmic Comics like this.  Also it's beautiful.

East of West:  Why I Read It-  My buddy Boolah loves Jonathan Hickman, but I can't get into his work at all.  But East of West.  East of West is a damn fine comic.  Set in an Alternate History Wild West America full of robot armor, the Four Horsemen, Cthulhu-esque monsters, and pretty much everything else I like jammed into a sprawling, epic comic.  With really pretty artwork.  So, yeah, I'm reading East of West.

Saga:  Why I Read It-  Speaking of Really Pretty Artwork, I give you Saga, probably the prettiest comic on this list.  What I like about Saga is that even though the actual story can move kinda slow (seriously, we've been in that lighthouse for awhile now), there's always some strange new thing in every issue.  I like novelty, and no one does novelty quite like the Saga crew.  Now, if only Fionna Staples didn't need to take a break every six months or so (Curse the limits of the human body!).

Multiple Warheads:  Why I Read It-  Uh, this one did come out this year, right?  I dunno, I have the memory of a Goldfish.  Anyway, Brandon Graham is awesome.  Multiple Warheads makes absolutely no sense at all, and it was still one of the best comics of the year.  That one issue with the Air Whale was better than everything Marvel and DC did all year.  Graham has blatantly abandoned anything resembling a traditional narrative with this series and yet somehow it still works.  I can't wait for the next edition of Multiple Warheads.  Oh, and as an added bonus we got Multiple Warheads: Downfall, which featured all of the pre-Image Multiple Warheads stories (including that hardcore porno issue, uncensored!  Sorry honey).

Prophet:  Why I Read It-  Prophet was better than anything else that came out this year that wasn't the Godland Finale.  The two issues I read last night were just... breathtaking.  Best Regular Comic of the Year.  My Current High Water Mark for How Comics Are Done Right.  Y'know, I've haven't explained why.  Let's see:  Living Planets, Wars Through Time, Bioships, Spacesharks, Outer Space Survival, Clone Armies, Breeding People to be used as WarMachines, Robots trying to remember what it was like to be human thousands of years ago, Bizarre Weapons, and some crazy new thing on every damn page.  Like the Godland Finale, it's almost too much.  But shouldn't that be the point?

Because I'm off my game this morning, I forgot some stuff for the NOTES section on the Main Site this morning.  First off, you might notice that the Native Venusian on this page is speaking some sort of weird hieroglyphic-like language.  In the original SOL strip the Native Venusians all spoke English.  So, why the difference?  Welp, SOL has the ability to assimilate and understand new and alien languages.  Again, remember that he is an Ancient and Forgotten God, so even English is a foreign language to him.  Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that SOL can understand and communicate with the Venusians, while Octopus Jones and Doom Eagle lack this ability.  Interesting side note: because they've been Cosmically Evolved, all of the members of the Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club also have the ability to speak and understand Alien Languages naturally.

Also, apparently, SOL can teleport people across great distances with an ability he calls a Sunbeam.  I didn't know he could do that.

Skull Mob 3-9

I got to sleep in today.  So I did.  Here's today's webcomic:

Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 9.  www.torcpress.com

I think it should be fairly obvious where I'm going with this by now.  Uh, Random Notes:

I was at a gas station last night, and when I went to the bathroom there was red liquid spread everywhere.  At first I thought it was blood.  Dear God it looked like blood.  Then I caught a smell that I recognized, which was cough syrup.  Someone bought some cough syrup and had trouble opening it up, and they sprayed it everywhere.  For a second I thought I had accidentally stepped into Silent Hill.

Bro is on tour in Europe right now.  I know he's having fun, but I still can't wait for him to get home.

My house has trouble staying warm at temperatures in the teens or single digits.  So I'm a bit chilly right now.

There's a few minor downsides to dating a gal who lives two hours away.  The biggest being when the weather goes to hell for weeks at a time, it can screw things up pretty good.  I miss my Mei (even if I did get to hang with her last night)!

I feel different lately.  I only seem to watch big movies in the theaters anymore, instead of little Indy films.  I don't even really bother watching Indy films on DVD anymore.  When I rent movies (yeah, I still rent movies) all I want to watch are No-Budget, terrible garbage movies.  I also have hair now.  My current Evolution is an odd one.  I worry that my comics aren't weird enough lately, that I'm getting too mainstream.  Then I look up at the page above with a ghost cartoon platypus and melty robo-armor and the exploding angel battle from previous pages and I go, yeah, I'm still odd.

I really like these last couple of pages.  I was kinda sweating whether Issue 20 was gonna be a good issue or not, but I think once the whole book is finished and assembled, it's gonna be beautiful.  I think.

Today's Webcomic:

I just realized that this is the first time this issue where we've had some action.  Who knew?

HFSAC 20 wraps up next week, which means I have to do my least favorite thing in all of Comics, doing Covers.  Ugh.  I am so bad at covers.

I'm kinda brain dead this morning.  I think I'm a little terrified to go to work today in the freezingdeathcold.

Pulp Horrorshow v4-7 + Last SOL

Today's Webcomic:

Pulp Horrorshow.  Volume 4.  Issue 1.  Page 7.  www.torcpress.com

We've just about wrapped up the first issue of the newest version of Pulp Horrorshow.  I pretty much covered everything I need to over in the NOTES section on the Main Site, so we'll just post our other webcomic for the day while we're at it:

SOL.  Issue 1.  Page 8.  End of Strip.  As I mentioned on the Main Site, this story originally went a full 16 pages, but I decided to call it good with this one.  I think I may use the remaining 8 pages for a Origin strip for another character.  Maybe.

In the meantime, HFSAC 20 is two weeks away from wrapping up.  Oh, and I'm snowed in right now.  Which sucks.

SDF 7-4 + 2013 Highlight Reel

Today's Webcomic:

SDF.  Issue 7.  Page 4.  www.torcpress.com

Although this wasn't the best year for TORC Press Financially or Commercially, it was a very good year creatively.  I completed my 100th comic and began a bold (albiet failed) initiative with the Webcomix.  There's lots of reasons why I have grown to love the webcomix, but one of the best is that I can construct a Year End HIGHLIGHT REEL, and actually include links to everything.  So, get comfy, and prepare to hit the BACK button a lot.

Oh, and this page is on the Highlight Reel, since it's absolutely hi-larious.  HUGS OF DOOOOOOM!

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club-  The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club rose like a phoenix from the ashes this year, reborn as a mad, fast paced, cosmic comic.  The cast was huge, the set pieces were huge, the action was huge.  Was it flawed?  Yeah.  Was it messy?  Oh yeah.  Did I make lots of mistakes?  Of course.  But the flaws are half the fun.  Having this comic back in action, and making it an ode to the 4th World and the 80s Silver Surfer comics I grew up with mish-meshed with all the mad little TORCisms I've developed over the years, made this comic an absolute hoot to create.  I have so many ideas for this comic, and I can't wait to get them all down on bristol.  Here's the Highlight Reel for HFSAC:

HFSAC 18:

The First Double Page Spread on Page 2 and Page 3:  This was the year of the Double Page Spread, and this was the first.  Sure, they don't work so great in the Online Format, but if you buy the Print Edition you get these babies in all their glory.  This Double gave us our first glimpse of the new cast of HFSAC, as well as the start of a wild brawl with Robots so Expendable they're literally wearing Red Shirts.

Page 9:  Some fun character moments are on this page, but the real reason this is on the Highlight Reel is for the Los Super Hip Brothers Psychedelic Dance Party.  Too many comics are too damn grim anymore.  Sometimes you gotta get your dance on, people.

Page 12:  The Gelatanous (misspelled) Blob Page!  LET'S SMASH IT!

Page 13:  The Best Darn Page of the Year, The Final Fantasy Page.  Sheer, dumb comix joy.

Page 15:  A funny page, and an important lesson, never assume anything.  Or eat strange looking food for that matter.

Page 16:  The Return of Classic HFSAC Villain, Levitone the Soul Eating Squid Demon from HELL!

HFSAC 19:

Page 1:  A good splash page, and a nice little, "Oh, this guy is a lot bigger than we are" type of page.

The Double Page Spread on Page 2 and Page 3:  Another Double with another "Cram everybody in and fight somebody" type of scenario.  Except this time they've got a real fight on their hands, and not just a flock of Red Shirts.

Page 7:  Our heroes go to 5-D Space to have a short conference while being in the middle of a deadly fight.  We've been in Dreamland before in Clown & Penguin #1, but this page is prettier.  Also, we get to see different versions of our heroes.  A cool page.

Page 11:  The Butterfly Bullet in All Its Glory.

Page 15:  OMNICHRONUS in All His Glory.  Personally, my Favorite Page of the Year.

Page 16:  A truly TORC Pressian Ending.  Because it involves tacos, of course.

HFSAC 20:  This one is almost done, so we'll run a highlight reel on it, too.

Page 1:  Space Smooch!  Is there any romance in comics anymore?  There is in the TORCverse.

The Double Page Spread on Page 2 and Page 3:  Another double page spread, except this one doesn't involve fighting.  It's got hugging, space dolphins, and my loving homage to Kirby's OMAC.  Pretty page too.

Page 5:  Just a really nice page.  Also, more dancing.

Page 11:  A storm of Angels, and enough color to melt eyeballs.  A nice capper to the year for HFSAC.

Skull Mob:  I need a dark comic, and Skull Mob serves that purpose.  I enjoy HFSAC a lot more, but the grim and gritty adventures of the Death Moth (who really came into his own this year) and Co were enjoyable in their own right.  This also gave you the On the Ground Perspective of my Universe.  On the Con Circuit this one sold better than HFSAC, which shouldn't be much of a surprise.  People like that kinda dark stuff.

Skull Mob 1:

Page 2:  Ultra-violence right out of the gate.  Really sets the tone.

Page 13:  I like this page for the bizarre flower thing growing out of the wall.  Very pretty, but kinda gross and offputting too.

Page 15:  Xipe Topec in all his horrifying glory.

Skull Mob 2:

Page 2 and Page 3:  The first double page spread for Skull Mob.  Also, Sewer Battle.  Also, that one dude gets a giant hole punched through his chest.  This was totally a throw back to the kind of stuff I would draw when I was a teenager.  Which was a hoot.

Page 16:  And then we jump to the concluding page.  The rest of the book is perfectly fine, there just wasn't a lot that looked good enough for the Highlight Reel.  This page is a good one though.  The Hard Light Armor is pretty cool.

Skull Mob 3:

Page 2 and Page 3:  Yes, I really love my double page spreads.  Sue me.  A bit of a flip flop from the previous issue, where our heroes are on the defensive.  Cool action stuff.

Page 5:  An inspired bit of horrible grossness.  Pretty much everything Skull Mob's supposed to be about.

Page 6:  Big, jowly dog monster.

SDF:  I've talked about it before, but SDF didn't really come together until Issue 6.  I'm not saying that Issues 1-5 are bad.  They're not.  Octopus Jones is a great character, the supporting cast is great, and there were some great monsters in those issues.  But I don't really think things Clicked until Issue 6.  So we're just gonna jump to Issue 6.  As for Issue 7, today's page is the only Highlight Reel worthy page so far.

SDF 6:

Page 2:  A nice action page, and my rather blatant statement about everything that's wrong with our real world.

Page 4:  The Chupacabra returns and eats a guy's head.  Wonderful.  Oh, and GOAT!

Page 5:  Ride em Giant Worm!

Page 6:  Doom Eagle uses Sea Food to violently kill people.  I love comics.

Page 11:  Dr. Dendull.

Page 12:  Wild, wild action.

Page 13:  And we end our 2013 Highlight Reel with Octopus Jones getting in a Big Hit.  It's been a good year.

SDF 7-1, SOL, and SDF 6 Now Available

Okay, first off, we'll put up today's page of SOL, because chronologically it goes first:

SOL.  Issue 1.  Page 7.  www.torcpress.com

And now today's regularly scheduled webcomic:

SDF.  Issue 7.  Page 3.  This story takes place a month or two after the SOL story above.

Also, SDF Issue 6 is now available for sale.  Here's the cover:

Issue 6 is where, in my opinion, SDF finally came together.  Fast action.  Crazy, unpredictable situations.  The return of several rare and obscure characters, such as the Chupacabra (GOAT!), Rakka the Witch Doctor, and most surprisingly, a completely reborn Doom Eagle.  And Dr. Dendull shows up to creep people out.  And it's all part of the continuing saga of Octopus Jones, a hero with a Magic Costume who just wants to do the right thing in a world gone perpetually insane.  SDF 6 is like all of our books:  It's Full Color, $3.50 plus $1.50 S&H, and be acquired at our online store at http://www.torcpress.com/store.html, or by sending a check or money order to:  TORC Press, c/o Joseph Morris, 330 S 5th St SW, Clay City, IL 62824.  Purchasing a copy of the book is a great way to show your support if you're a fan of the webcomic in specific or TORC Press in general.

Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 7.  www.torcpress.com

Also, we've got:

Page 5 of SOL, and...

Page 6 of SOL.

So, you might be asking yourself, "Hey Joe (why you calling me Joe?  My name is Joseph.), why are you farting out two pages of SOL for no good reason out of nowhere?"  Well Mysterious Reader Person, I have my reasons, and they will be apparent tomorrow.  But that is tomorrow.  This is today.  And today I am hungry.

Oh, and before I forget, head over to the Main Site and read the NOTES section on the Above Skull Mob Page.  It'll give you some Information as well as some hints on the identity of one of the characters.

Now Breffass (that's how I pronounce Breakfast.  What?).

Skull Mob 3-6

Today's Webcomic:

Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 6.  www.torcpress.com

Sooooo, yesterday's Blog Entry was a bit of a downer.  Discovering that Picturebox was cashing in its chips hit home for me in a way I didn't expect, and it kinda made me go on a bit of a Rant about how crummy a year this was for TORC Press Commercially/Financially.  There was concern expressed by a couple of parties over yesterday's Blog, so allow me to clear up a few things.

1) This has been the Best Year of My Life!  A lot of the credit goes to my darling Mei, who made this entire year amazing.  Having someone so incredible in my life changed the entire complexion of my year.  As an added bonus, my Brother got married (and the Wedding/Reception was AWESOME!), and I got the best sister-in-law a guy could ever hope for in Mary.  This has been an incredible year for me.

2)  Even though the reception to my work has been somewhat unfortunate, that doesn't mean that I'm dissappointed (how am I not spelling that right?) with the work I've been doing this year.  I've been producing some really killer comics that I'm very happy with.  There are pages of HFSAC that are among the best I've ever done ever.  I love the ugly pulpiness of Skull Mob.  And SDF finally came together with Issue 6.  I'm on a Roll, and I couldn't be happier with the work I'm doing.

3)  There are still people out there that support my work.  Even though people aren't as receptive to Independent work at Cons like they used to be, there's still those amazing people that seek out and love to try new Indy work.  And although I don't have a huge fanbase, I do actually have a fanbase.  I've got some of the best supporters a guy like me could hope for, and if I don't say it enough, let me say it now:  I greatly appreciate all the support I've gotten over the years from all the people who have read and enjoyed my books.  I humbly thank you.

Again, this has been the Best Year of My Life.  I'm gonna be greedy, and hope that next year is even better.

HFSAC 20-12

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 20.  Page 12.  www.torcpress.com

I just found out that comic book publisher Picturebox is closing up shop.  This sucks, since Picturebox were the guys publishing all of Brian Chippendale's work.  I was a very big fan of the company and their output for a year or two, but the writing did seem to be on the wall this year, as they published nothing that really caught my attention.  It's been a bad year for Things I Like.  The Extreme Revival, which gave us the brilliant "Glory" and "Prophet" (and my favorite guilty pleasure books, the revived "Youngblood" and "Bloodstrike") ground to a sudden, albiet predictable halt, with only Prophet continuing to limp along.  Fantagraphics, the top dog publisher of High Art comics, had to turn to frickin' Kickstarter for financing (not a good sign).  My favorite wrestling promotion, CHIKARA, seemingly bit the dust (maybe, it's hard to explain).  Tom Scioli recently completed his brilliant "Satan's Soldier" only to announce that he's doing (grooooan) "Transformers vs. GI Joe" (groooan.  Sigh.  I know it's Scioli, and Scioli will make it awesome, but I still wish he would just stick to his own stuff).

This was the year where I almost ended TORC Press once and for all, too.  In previous years, I've considered quitting comics because I was depressed, but this year, I considered quitting because this year sucked for TORC Press.  I failed at the small conventions.  I failed miserably at the big conventions.  People's reactions to my work largely ranged from Utter Apathy to Blatant Disgust.  This whole Internet Blitzkrieg Plan has proven to be a complete and utter failure.  My Low Moments were so incredibly low this year.  At a little convention on the Kentucky/Tennessee border, I watched as people bought sealed boxes full of "Mystery Items" for $10, while people wouldn't even pick up and flip through a copy of my $1.50 comic for free.  I watched people spend $6 or more on plastic sleeves to protect a single piece of artwork that cost $1.50 to make and was sold for $10 or more.  After spending close to $1000 to get a table at C2E2, I discovered that my table space DIDN'T ACTUALLY COME WITH A TABLE, so I had to rent one for an additional $60.  All for the privilege of being in the area of the Con with the worst foot traffic.

On Saturday at Wizard World Chicago I was fully prepared to quit comics forever, that's how bad I felt about everything.  But, as you can see, I didn't.  Cause the truth is, I make comics for me.  I fight for me.  I do this for me.  If only 10 people in the whole world are interested in my work, then so be it.  I hope they continue to enjoy what I do.  In the meantime, TORC Press lives because I say it does.  And I'm not interested in going the way of the dodo until I'm a shriveled up old man.

HFSAC 20-11

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 20.  Page 11.  www.torcpress.com

The big green guy is the Vertionce, a Militaristic Angelic Warrior that first appeared in... "Truth or Consequences Monthly" #3... maybe?  He only appeared briefly, and only via a monitor.  If there's more time we'll talk more about him later.  The half nekkid woman with fire coming out of her head is his right-hand-woman, Romiel.  The Vertionce was first created a long, long, long time ago, and was inspired quite a lot by Todd McFarlane's sense of character design (He resembles a character from Spawn, but damned if I can remember which one).  As for Romiel, she just always looked like that.  I think she also popped up briefly in the Olde Xerox Comics Days, but I can't remember which issue she is in.  The Red Sword is new, as is the Vertionce's hugemongous Sword.  As for the rest of the Angels pictured in this scene, they're just Red Shirts, so I probably shouldn't have wasted so much Imagination designing them all.  Ce la vie.

Pulp Horrorshow v.4-1-6

Today's Webcomic Crushes It:

Pulp Horrorshow.  Volume 4.  Issue 1.  Page 6.  www.torcpress.com

If I had Magnetic Powers, I would always keep a giant wrecking ball hovering in the atmosphere somewhere, just in case.

SDF 7-2

Today's Webcomic:

SDF.  Issue 7.  Page 2.  www.torcpress.com

1) I once caught a large mouth bass in my Grandparent's pond.  It was huge.  I've never caught anything that big ever since.

2)  Fishing is a common running theme in my comics.  Ironically, I rarely ever go fishing.  I'm not sure why I'm always writing about fishing when I'm not a fisherman myself.

3)  The whole "Doom Eagle knows Octopus Jones but OJ doesn't know DE" thing is gonna go on for awhile, but eventually there will be an explanation for it.  Really.

4)  I wonder where they got teleported off to?

SDF 7-1

Today's webcomic:

Alrighty, first off, I was supposed to have the Print Edition of SDF 6 ready to go for today, but I don't.  I continue to blame the burst pipes in my house.  Sure, I got em fixed, but they threw me off schedule pretty bad.  I'm gonna try to have the Print Edition ready by next week.  Honestly, it don't much matter, I wouldn't be able to take orders this weekend anyway.  Not that anyone is just rip rarin' to go to order Issue 6 either, so I suppose it all works out.  Anyway, this is the start of Issue 7 of SDF.  Probably the most quiet start to an Issue of SDF to date.  Don't worry, I'm sure it will pick up in a few pages.

Happy Thanksgiving! (Skull Mob 3-5)

Happy Turkey Day Folks!  Here's a pretty gross page of Skull Mob:

Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 5.  www.torcpress.com

If you were wondering where Renee K-9 and Peacock got off to, well, this explains it.  Renee gets to display her ability to asexually reproduce, and Peacock displays his key sense of self-preservation.

May everyone Eat Hearty today!

Skull Mob 3-4

Today's Webcomic:

Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 4.  www.torcpress.com.

I should probably take Turkey Day weekend off, but like virtually every store on the planet, I'm just gonna keep on doing my thing.  So, the webcomic will continue to update like normal all week.  As far as Black Friday promotion and other stuff go, I don't really have anything planned, but if you do order stuff through the online store this week, I'll probably throw some Original Art in with your order.  So there's that.

HFSAC 20-10

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 20.  Page 10.  www.torcpress.com

I remember when I was writing the script for this issue that it was around this page that I became dissatisfied with this story.  (Yeah, I'm actually writing a full script for HFSAC.  Who knew?)  At the script stage, there's no art yet, so by this point, I'm over halfway through with the story, and all I've got are a bunch of 9 panel pages with too much dialogue, and a bunch of slow establishing shots.  So, here we are on Page 10, and it's just a Temple fading into 3D Space and our heroes walking and I wanna rip my hair out (which I can do now since I have hair) and call myself Brian Michael Bendis and award myself the BMB Boring Comics Award.

But, after doing the artwork for this issue, with all the pretty landscapes and environments, and the bright, lush colors, and some of the fun stuff that happens early on, I'm pretty happy with this comic so far.

Having said that, this page is still boring.

Having said that, next Monday's page is killer.  Because there is no way I'm gonna pull a Bendis and have absolutely nothing happen for 16 pages.

HFSAC 20-9

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 20.  Page 9.  www.torcpress.com

So, I've been working far enough ahead on the webcomics lately that I have had some breathing room for most of this month.  But now, thanks to spending two weeks doing unscheduled plumbing and renovations, I'm not only cutting it disturbingly close on my HFSAC deadlines, but I haven't got a start on my December output on the other strips either.  And now it's Thanksgiving week, and whereas normally that would mean I have three free days to work up as many pages as possible, this year I have stuff going on the entire weekend.  It looks like I'm riding the razor's edge again.  Course, that's half the fun.

2 Pages of Pulp Horrorshow

Alrighty, Here is today's Page:

Pulp Horrorshow.  Volume 4.  Issue 1.  Page 5.  www.torcpress.com

And here was yesterday's Page:

Pulp Horrorshow.  Volume 4.  Issue 1.  B Side.  Page 2.

I would talk a bunch about both pages, but I'm gonna live a lifelong dream and play videogames with my girlfriend.  Woo!

Pulp Horrorshow B Side

Today's Unscheduled Webcomic:

This is Page 1 of the Back Up story for Pulp Horrorshow, Volume 4, Issue 1.  www.torcpress.com

Sometimes an idea just hits you, and you've gotta run with it.  Or at least that's the way it works for me.

Skull Mob 3-3

The Second Half of Our Double Page Spread:

Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 3.  www.torcpress.com

I was reading a column online the other day where the writer was lamenting the scarcity of double page spreads in comics nowadays, cause double page spreads don't translate into digital comics, and since most comics are also packaged digitally nowadays, the double page spread is a rare and dying breed.  I'm pretty sure I pointed out a few months back that the double pager is the only tool that the traditional Print Comic has in its arsenal that Digital/Online comics can't faithfully reproduce.  I mean, this page looks swell here, but it will look 1000 times better when it's combined with Page 2 in the Print Edition.  It's that Epic, Sweeping Widescreen approach to storytelling that brings to mind the glory days of 70s Kirby that I love.  That's why I incorporate so many Doubles nowadays.  Plus, with a scene like this, it's reminiscent of the Video Game and Warhammer 40K scenes I would draw as a kid.  Those were fun.  These are funner, cause they're for realsies.

Skull Mob 3-2

Today's Webcomic:

The first half of a double page spread.  Skull Mob.  Issue 3.  Page 2.  www.torcpress.com

It's somewhat appropriate that the Death Moth is having a Sewer Battle, as I myself continue to struggle with the plumbing in my own house.  Sigh.

HFSAC 20-8

Today's Webcomic:

The Hot Fudge Sundae Adventure Club.  Issue 20.  Page 8.  www.torcpress.com

Most of what I need to say I already said on the NOTES page over at the Main Site, so I'll skip alla that.

This page barely got done on time.  I pride myself on working ahead, and as of right now I have enough material for all of the webcomics for the Entire Month... except HFSAC.  HFSAC is the book that takes the most work and is the slowest to produce, so as a result I was working week to week on the necessary pages.  Then my pipes burst, and suddenly I had no time for drawing and handcoloring because I was too busy digging out pipes by hand out of the mud.  Hopefully, now that I have a bathroom again I will have time this week to finish the two pages I need for next Monday/Tuesday.

And the real irony is that I'm the only person who I'm meeting these self imposed deadlines for.  No one's reading my webcomix.

Today's Webcomic:

And don't forget, Skull Mob #2 is now available for sale!  Just head over to the main site at the above link, and scroll down to the cover image.  There's a handy dandy "Add to Cart" button just below it.  Buying the physical books not only gives you a cool, handsome comic to read, but also is a great way to support TORC Press.
